Microstructure Analysis Laboratory

Microstructure plays a vital role in the wide variety of properties of materials (mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, and magnetic). In metallurgy and materials science, microstructure refers to the size, shape and distribution of each phase in a polycrystalline and/or multiphase material. Microstructure is largely developed during processing.  Microstructure analysis is the primary step in failure analysis of a component.

Major Equipments:

  • Mounting Machine
  • Disc Polisher
  • Image Analyzer

Heat Treatment Laboratory

The overall purpose of this laboratory is to explore the effect of heat treatment on the structure of the metal and its mechanical properties.  Heat treatment is a combination of pre determined heating and cooling operations applied to a metal or alloy in the solid state in such way to produce certain microstructures and desired the properties. Annealing, Normalizing, Quench Hardening, Tempering, and Austempering are the five of the important heat treatment methods.  Hardenability, (i.e.) the relative stability of a material can be studied in detailed in this laboratory.

Major Equipments:

  • Muffle furnace
  • Salt bath furnace
  • Jominy End Quench Apparatus
  • Brinell Hardness Testing Machine
  • Image Analyzers

Materials Processing Laboratory

This laboratory is intended to give an intensive experience in processing techniques used for ceramics, metals, and polymers. Sintering of a ceramic, casting and post-processing (work hardening, heat treatment, etc.) of a metal and preparation and extrusion of a polymer are typical of the processes examined in this laboratory. The measurements (e.g., powder particle size, compaction, force, temperature, grain size, molecular weight, density) applicable to the successful processing of the material and the final properties (e.g., hardness, ductility, strength, stiffness) will be emphasized.

Major Equipments:

  • Ball mill
  • Sieve Shaker
  • Die and UTM
  • Muffle furnace

Composite Laboratory

It provides hands on experience on the fabrication of composite materials and their properties which requires an in-depth knowledge of basic material behavior.

Major Equipments:

  •  Fabrication unit
  • UTM with 10KN capacity
  • Impact Tester

 Advanced Materials Characterization Laboratory

This lab imparts a complete knowledge in advanced characterization of materials.  The electron microscope provides high-resolution images of materials, up to magnification of 1, 00,000X.  Using X-ray diffractometer, single phase formation, phase identification and texture analysis can be done. These instruments provide diffraction intensity data that can then be compared to the databases in the lab to confirm the formation of single phase and phase identification.

Major Equipments:

  • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
  • X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD)

Strength of Materials Laboratory

One of the principle concerns of an engineer is the analysis of materials used in structural applications. The Strength of Materials Laboratory gives an opportunity to apply loads to various materials under different equilibrium conditions, to perform tests on materials in tension, torsion, compression, and deflection. These conditions and/or constraints are designed to reinforce classroom theory with real time condition by performing required tests, analyze subsequent data, and present the results.

 Major Equipments:

  • Brinell Hardness Tester
  • Rockwell Hardness Tester
  • Impact Tester
  • Universal Testing Machine

Manufacturing Technology Laboratory

This laboratory exposes students to practical use of industrial tools used in the manufacturing industry. Care and proper handling of workshop equipment and tools is also emphasized before and during, the lab and project work. Instructors are always present to guide students in the proper operation of equipment.

Major Equipments:

  • Lathe Machine
  • Drilling Machine
  • Shaping Machine
  • Grinder Machine
  • Surface Grinder
  • Milling Machine
  • Lathe tool dynamometer

Foundry and Powder Metallurgy Laboratory

This laboratory make students to learn about melting of metals, casting of metals and various sand testing methods and offers practical knowledge of powder metallurgy: Powder synthesis, compaction and sintering which helps to improve brief knowledge about foundry technology and metals in the form of powders with various properties.

Major Equipments

  • Permeability Tester
  • Sieve Shaker
  • Compressive and shear strength machine
  • Infrared moisture balance
